laban review of Alison Two

A rather harsh review of Alison Two from Craig Laban.

I've never been to the Alison at Blue Bell (the first one), but my parents raved about it. Looks like Alison Barshak is using the Alison name to expand. The quality will be less, but will attract crowds and money...

She is not the first and certainly not the last.

Gayle

Phew! sorry for the major delay in our posts! Trying to get back at this cause I enjoy it, and I want to be able to Twitter about it :-)

HAVE to write about our experience at Gayle a few months ago. In two and a half years of living in Philly, it was, hands down, the best meal we have ever had. It's a tiny spot run by Daniel Stern off South Street on 3rd. I'd recommend getting reservations. One of my favorite things during our visit was that Daniel Stern actually came out of the kitchen and talked to us for a while. It wasn't crowded that night but still, a nice gesture, and he seemed like a nice guy.

On to the food... the menu changes often and is posted on the website, but don't let it fool you. When we went, I got Shepard's Pie and Bradd got "Pork n' Beans." Well, erase all thoughts that come to mind when you hear these dishes. Mine was an absolutely perfect small filet, with a thing on the side that was a hunk of mashed potato, vegetables, and beef wrapped in a perfectly crispy round of bacon. It's hard to do it justice but it was great. Bradd's Pork n' Beans was a dish of 4-5 different types/styles of pork and the greatest green beans I have ever tasted. So, moral is, call the waitress over and ask her to describe anything on the menu you are curious about cause THAT will determine what you get. Don't assume anything.

They are known for the Risotto Fingers appetizer, which was great. The mac n' cheese side was excellent too. And then for dessert, trust me - GET THE "BREAKFAST". It's like french toast and ice cream and complete heaven. Sounds weird but its sooooooooooo good.

That's my summary. Its hard to explain really what all the dishes were so just ask. I have faith that everything there must be great and I can't wait to go back!

Pub and Kitchen

I am a little sketchy on when we went to Pub and Kitchen, but I think sometime in November. I really enjoyed this place. it was crowded, but we only had to wait 2o minutes. We did go with another couple and I would suggest others do the same. It had a nice beer list and I chose old speckled hen, which was awesome. I also ordered the burger since I heard that it was good. I felt the burger was ok and couldnt pinpoint what was missing. Don't get me wrong it was good, but I've had better.

Kristy had fish and chips. She felt they were ok, but didnt seem crisp and were small. I think there was something amiss in the kitchen most likly due to being crowded.

All in all the food was good or at least that is everyone said. It is not a normal pub type fare, but a bit pricier and fancier. I dont see a menu on the web site, but other items we had included mussels, cheese, olives, chicken.

I did have a friend say that he watched the Phillies world series games here. I only saw one TV downstairs, but did not go upstairs. Unless there are more TV I would not go here to watch a game. It is not a godo spot to watch sports.

My verdict. This is great place to have a few drinks with friends over some good food. I will go again.

We are back

After a long hiatus we are back. We will have some updates from 2008 and 2009. We are also going to expand our topics just a bit to include any restaurant news, beer to drink, well I guess anything related to food and drink as well as good times.
